Banyak sekali cara untuk menyatakan atau mengungkapkan pilihan dalam bahasa Inggris.
Berikut ini macam - macam cara untuk mengungkapkan pilihan ( Preferences ) :
1. S + prefer + noun + to + noun
E.g ( contoh ) :
- I prefer yellow to orange.
- We prefer autumn to winter.
- She prefer rabbits to cats.
2. S + prefer + gerund + to + gerund
E.g ( contoh ) :
- Sinta prefers climbing to hiking.
- My mother prefers cooking to working.
- We prefer studying English to (studying) mathematics.
3. S + prefer + to V-1 + than + to V-1
E.g ( contoh ) :
- I prefer to stay at home than to go out.
- She prefers to sing a song than to dance a traditional dance.
- He prefers to make a speech than to deliver a speech.
4. S + prefer + to V-1 + than + (to) V-1
E.g ( contoh ) :
- I prefer to stay at home than (to) go out.
- She prefers to sing a song than (to) dance a traditional dance.
- He prefers to make a speech than (to) deliver a speech.
5. S + would prefer + to V -1 + rather than + .....
E.g ( contoh ) :
- I'd prefer to stay in a house than (to stay) in a hotel
- I'd prefer to eat my mother's cooking than (to eat) my sister''s cooking.
- I'd prefer to do English homework than (to do) mathematics homework.
6. S + would rather + V -1 + than + V-1
E.g ( contoh ) :
- I'd rather study at night than (study) in the morning.
- I'd rather drink milk than (drink) coffee.
- She'd rather live in country than (live) in city.
7. S + would rather + be + V-ing + than + be + V-ing
E.g ( contoh ) :
- Id rather be standing than (be) sitting.
- We'd rather be swimming than (be) fishing.
- They'd rather be walking than (be) running.
8. S + like + gerund + better than + gerund
E.g ( contoh ) :
- He likes typing better than writing.
- I like speaking better than listening.
- Rara likes lending than borrowing.
9. S + like + noun + better than + noun
E.g ( contoh ) :
- We like mangosteen better than papaya.
- I like water better than juice.
- She likes fried rice better than pizza.
10. S + had better + V - 1
E.g ( contoh ) :
- We had better do our homework.
- You had better go now.
- I had better help my mother.
11. S + Should + V-1
E.g ( contoh ) :
- We should attend her wedding party tonight.
- I should come back tomorrow.
- Handi should pick his mother up.
12. S + ought to + V-1
E.g ( contoh ) :
- I ought to finish my duty now.
- I ought not to finish my duty now.
- Ought I to finish my duty now ?
Catatan :
Jika dalam bentuk negative "to" bisa dihilangkan.
I oughtn't (to) leave the key in the car.
13. S + be supposed to + V-1
E.g ( contoh ) :
- Anna is supposed to arrive in time.
- Anna is not supposed to arrive in time.
- Is Anna supposed to arrive in time ?
