1. Pengertian
Mood
adalah kata kerja yang menunjukkan cara suatu perbuatan dilakukan (menunjukkan
lagak lagunya verb itu digunakan dalam kalimat).
2. Macam – Macam Mood
Dalam bahasa
Inggris ada tiga macam mood, yaitu :
1. Indicative Mood
2. Imperative Mood
3. Subjunctive

Mood
Indicative Mood
adalah bentuk verb yang digunakan untuk menunjukkan kenyataan, membuat kalimat
pernyataan, kalimat tanya, dan pengandain yang mungkin (dapat) terjadi (menjadi
kenyataan).
Penggunaan
Indicative Mood
1.
Menunjukkan kenyataan.
e e.g ( contoh ) :
1. I mailed some letters yesterday.
2. She is very beautiful.
3. He goes to school every day.
4. We love our country.
5. They did not come to the party last night.

Menyampaikan pernyataan.
1. Are you a student ?
2. Will he come here ?
3. Who understands this ?
4. Why don’t they study hard ?
5. Have you bought a new novel ?

3. Menyatakan
suatu pengandaian yang dapat terjadi (menjadi kenyataan).
e.g ( contoh ) ::
1. If he has time, he will visit you.
2. If she receives a letter, she writes back soon.
3. If it rains, I will not go out.
4. If I have much money, I will go abroad.

2. Imperative
Mood
Imperative Mood
yaitu bentuk yang digunakan untuk memerintah, melarang, meminta, dan mengajak :
digunakan hanya dalam bentuk present tense.
Penggunaan
Imperative Mood

Menyampaikan perintah dan larangan.
1. Don’t be lazy !
2. Do it now !
3. Shut the door !
4. Leave here immediately !

Menyampaikan permintaan.
1. Give me that pencil, please !
2. Pass the salt, please !

Menyampaikan ajakan.

:
Dalam membuat
kalimat imperative, subyek kalimat adalah You, tidak perlu
disebutkan. Jadi jangan : You come here please !
3. Subjunctive
Mood
Subjunctive Mood
adalah bentuk verb yang digunakan untuk menyatakan suatu hal yang diharapkan
terjadi (permohonan atau do’a), pengandaian yang tidak sesuai dengan
kenyataan atau yang tidak mungkin terjadi.
Penggunaan
Subjunctive Mood

Menyatakan harapan
1. Long live the president. ( hiduplah preseiden )
2. God be with you. ( semoga Allah beserta anda)
3. My God forgive you.
4. Have a good time.

Menyatakan pengandaian.
Untuk

Subjunctive Mood juga digunakan bersama dengan kata wish (berharap, berhasrat,
ingin) untuk menyatakan pengandaian atau harapan yang tidak terpenuhi pada
waktu lampau, sekarang atau mungkin dapat terjuwud di masa yang akan datang.
a. Jika wish
menunjukkan pada present atau future time, maka
dalam clausenya digunakan bntuk past tense.

He isn’t going to be here tomorrow.
I wish he were going
to be here tomorrow.

Menunjukkan Present Tense
Subject + wish..... + subject + past

(But,
I am sorry I don’t know.)

I wish Ulin were here.
(But,
Ulin isn’t here.)

I don’t live in Bali.
(I wish I lived there.)
(in Bali).
b. Jika
pengandaian dengan wish menunjukkan pada masa lampau, maka dalam clause-nya
digunakan bentuk Past Perfect Tense.
1. I wish I had known how
to do it.
(= I didn’t
know)
2. I wish he had not
come late.
(= He came late)
3. She wishes Amir had
been here.
(Amir was not here)
4. I wish she had studied hard.
(= She didn’t study hard)

Catatan :
Kata wish dapat
diganti dengan if only untuk maksud yang sama.
1. If only I knew how to do it.
(It means : I don’t know)
2. If only I lived in Bali.
(= I don’t live in Bali)
3. If only it were not cold.
(= It is cold)
4. If only she had studied hard.
(= She didn’t study hard)
5. If only I had known how to do it.
(= I didn’t know

4. Bentuk
Past Subjuntive juga digunakan di belakang kata as if atau as
though untuk menyatakan pengandaian / perumpamaan yang tidak sesuai
dengan kenyataan.

1. He orders me around as if I were
his wife.
(But, I am not his wife.)
2. She talks as though (as if) she
understood the problem.
(But, She doesn’t
understand the problem.)
3. It looks as though (as if) it

Catatan :
1.
Verb sebelum as if atau as though dapat di
ubah dalam bentuk Past Tense tanpa mengubah arti kalimat.
2.
Kalimat dalam bentuk Present Perfect Tense bila dijadikan bentuk subjunctive
dinamakan Past Perfect Subjunctive.
1.
I have lived here for three days, but it seems as if I had
lived here for three months.
2. He
didn’t attend the meeting last night, but he talks as though he had
attend.
5.Past Subjuntive
digunakan dalam susunan :
It is time (that) + subject + past verb
|
Susunan ini
menunjukkan bahwa suatu kegiatan dilakukan, namun sudah sedikit terlambat dari
waktu yang seharusnya.

It is time we started to work. (sudah waktunya kita bekerja.)
2.
It is time (that) you went home. (sudah waktunya anda pulang.
3.
It is time (that) I took a rest.
6. Bentuk Subjunctive
digunakan sesudah would rather untuk menyatakan pilihan lebih
suka.
1.
Bila menunjukkan masa kini (Present Tense)
Subject + would
rather (that) + subject + past
tense.....

Budi would rather (that) his girl friend worked in
the same department.
(His
girl friend doesn’t work in the same department.)
2.
Ali would rather (that) it were not
cold now. ( = It si cold now.)

I would rather (that) you paid by cash. (You

Menunjukkan masa lampau (Past Tense)

7. Bentuk Subjunctive
seriing digunakan dalam bahasa resmi (formal) untuk menyatakan perintah, saran,
usulan dan sebagainya. Dalam bentuk ini “should” yang sesungguhnya merupakan
ciri (indikator) bentuk subjunctive lebih sering dihilangkan.

Dalam
kalimat – kalimat tersebut di atas kata that dapat
dihilangkan.
8. Bentuk Subjunctive
dapat digunakan untuk maksud yang sama seperti nomor 7 di
atas bersama dengan : verb atau adjective berikut ini dengan pola
tertentu :
